What are Sutures?
Sutures are used for the repairing and closing of tissue following trauma or surgery. There are two elements to a suture; a needle to enable entry into the tissue and a thread which is used to close and secure the tissue. Sutures have been used for thousand of years. Early needles were made of bone or silver, whilst early threads were made out of catgut and silk. In recent years newer, higher-tech materials have been developed for suturing.
Sutures can be used to close both topical wounds as well as sub-dermally to attach tissue within the body.
There are two main types of sutures; absorbable and non-absorbable, which refers to the quality of the thread and whether it will degrade in the body.
We offer an extensive range of sutures, both absorbable and non-absorbable. The sutures are split into further sub-categories based on characteristics of the thread, which may be monofilament, polyfilament or psuedomonofilament.

Absorbable sutures are mainly used within the body, with each range having a specific absorbable property, to ensure a high tensile strength for as long as required by each type of procedure.
Non-absorbable sutures do not lose their strength and need removing after their requirement is no longer needed.
The thread may be monofilament, polyfilament or psuedomonofilament.
The shape and size of the needle determines the angle of entry and exit within a surgical field. Additionally, there are different cutting profiles.
There are several shapes of surgical needles depending upon the surgical procedure.
